Windy As Heck

Las Vegas Motor Speedway Spring Race Weekend Review

Sitting in the grandstands at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for three days in a row usually requires some sunscreen, a cold drink, and maybe a LVMS branded seat cushion, but this was no normal weekend. With a cold weather system moving through and even snow on the mountains surrounding Las Vegas when I arrived on Tuesday, it was a very windy and chilly couple of days.

Unlike the wind however, the Cup Series race on Sunday was not wild or crazy. The race was very calm with only 2 total non-competition cautions the whole race, both coming within the final stage, one being Joey Logano spinning through the front-stretch grass after contact with Brad Keslowski coming out of turn four and one for Aric Almirola six laps from the Checkered flag. This second caution allowed William Byron to pit and come out ahead of then leader Kyle Larson, allowing Byron to race on and win in overtime. Hendrick cars dominated the whole race.

The Friday night Truck race however, was not so calm with multiple cautions for trucks spinning all over turns two and four. With this race being a night race starting around 6pm local track time, this race was the one that was filled with cautions and spins. Kyle Busch took a commanding lead and never gave it up finishing way in front of the rest of the field to start his potential sweep of the weekend however this would not come to fruition as he would not be able to match his Truck performance in the Xfinity and Cup series races.

Saturdays Xfinity race, The Alsco Uniforms 300, was also a fun and windy one with by far the best racing out of all three events. The last stage of this race had everyone glued to their seats to see if Chandler Smith could win his first mile and half of the season. Unfortunately, he would not see the inside of victory lane as a last lap pass on the backstretch by Austin Hill took first place away from Smith. Austin Hill has set himself up nicely for the start of the season winning two of the first three races on the schedule.

Although the conditions for fans were not great with few vendors in the midway and cold and windy weather, the action this weekend still made for a pretty good race weekend.
